For over a decade, the Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine has offered comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (and related disorders) across the lifespan. Under the leadership of medical director and founder, Joel L. Young, M.D., all RCBM clinicians are highly qualified to deliver the most current and effective treatments for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
Dr. Young speaks extensively throughout the country on ADHD and related disorders. Furthermore, Dr. Young, along with our talented clinical nurse practitioners, work with local medical residents to teach effective diagnosis and treatment interventions for ADHD and related disorders.
Dr. Young and RCBM staff understand that ADHD symptoms are more than just a nuisance. These symptoms can negatively impact academic and work performance, romantic and familial relationships, and general psychological well-being. Lack of treatment or ineffective treatment can lead to increased risk of failed relationships, financial difficulties, chemical dependency, accidents and injuries, depression and anxiety, among other mental health disorders.
An effective treatment approach is a comprehensive treatment approach. ADHD treatment at RCBM may include a number of the following interventions, all provided at our clinic:
-Psychological Screening: The screening process allows our clinicians to take a comprehensive look at the symptoms that a patient is experiencing in order to make the most accurate and complete diagnosis possible.
-Coaching: Pragmatic, goal-focused treatment tailored to the patient’s specific needs |
and/or |
-Counseling: Specific treatment goals are established with special attention paid to how ADHD symptoms have impacted the patient’s self-esteem and general mental health.
-Marital/Family Therapy: Significant others and family members may become involved in the therapeutic process (with the permission of the patient) in order to work on healthy communication. Further, couples and families can work with our therapists to create an environment that will foster and support the growth of the patient as they undergo treatment.
-Medication Management: Medication can be an integral part of treatment. Dr. Young and our staff of three dedicated nurses are experts in psychopharmacological treatments for ADHD. RCBM clinicians pride ourselves on staying abreast updates in the field of ADHD treatment (and all mental health-related topics).
-Psychoeducation: Understanding one’s diagnosis is a crucial part of treatment. As a routine part of the diagnostic process, our clinicians help the patient to understand his/her diagnosis through the use of educational brochures, articles and DVDs. Educating the family of the patient can be an important element of treatment as well.
-Career Counseling: Individuals with ADHD may struggle to find a career that is suited for them given their unique challenges. RCBM therapists can guide these patients through the process of examining their skills, career-related values, educational background, strengths and weaknesses in order to determine the most realistic career path for them. This is done through counseling sessions as well as career testing.
-Participation in Clinical Research: RCBM is proud to offer clinical research trials on ADHD and other mental health disorders and we are currently recruiting for several such trials. All services offered during the course of research participation are offered at no charge to the patient. Please refer to our Research Studies page.
-Academic Advocacy (for Adults): It is important for those with ADHD to be aware of and utilize the services that are available to them to help them achieve academic success. Our therapists have found great success in working with colleges and universities to help undergraduate and graduate students secure accommodations that increase their chances of succeeding in their academic endeavors.
-Individualized Education Programs (for Children and Young Adults): RCBM therapists understand the importance of an academic program that is tailored to the specific needs of the patient. Our child and adolescent clinical team are well-versed in educational accommodations and work closely with local schools in order to achieve the best outcome for our patients.
-Parental Guidance: Parenting a child or teenager with an ADHD can be difficult at times. RCBM therapists routinely work with parents to develop skills to appropriately handle the struggles of parenting an ADHD child. This can include behavioral modification techniques, developing an appropriate household routine, exploring how to create a constructive system of rewards and punishments, and basic support for these [often frustrated] parents.
Our clinic offers all of these components of ADHD treatment and we treat patients of all ages. You can take comfort in knowing that your prescriber and your therapist are under the same roof and are, therefore, able to communicate closely and often about your treatment.

Please be advised that this screening tool should not be used to diagnose ADHD, but to determine whether you are experiencing a number of symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of ADHD. Please discuss your results with your clinician.
