Suicide Attempt: A Family Crisis

I am a survivor of suicide.  This November marks two years since I heard the words; “Your mother tried to kill herself.”  It was one of the scariest moments in my life, but also one of great relief that she had not succeeded, and went on to receive treatment.  Less than a year later, her sister, estranged from the family for more than a decade, would not be so fortunate.

It’s likely you may know someone who has committed suicide, or attempted it, even if you aren’t aware of this part of their past.  According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), nearly one million people attempt suicide each year, and 90% of people who die by suicide have a treatable mental illness.  Their website, afsp.org, offers detailed tips on what to do when you suspect someone has suicidal intentions.

For the 14th year, the AFSP presents International Survivors of Suicide day for people who have lost someone to suicide. I participated at the event last year and found it very moving and powerful.  This year’s event falls on Saturday, November 17, including seven Michigan locations.  Common Ground will be hosting the nearest local event in Bloomfield Hills, and also offers regular Survivors of Suicide support groups throughout the year.   More information can be obtained at commongroundhelps.org.

I would make the case that the term “survivors of suicide” could extend beyond loved ones left behind. The people who have made attempts, and those who love and care for them, have still survived a serious traumatic event.  If you are dealing with thoughts of suicide, the after effects of an attempt, or concern for someone you know, don’t hesitate to reach out to the many available resources.  RCBM has an experienced clinical team available to meet your needs.  Schedule an appointment with us at (248) 608-8800 or contact one of the suicide prevention hotlines and awareness organizations listed below.
