RCBM FAQ's

History of RCBM

Dr. Joel Young, MD started the Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine in 1993, inspired by his commitment to the promotion of measurement based, quality mental health care with his desire to bring mental health services to the community at large. Dr. Young found there was a large need for measurement-based mental health care that was only available for very limited numbers of people – well connected pockets in the community. He wanted to bring these services to a wider reach of individuals. Most psychiatrists did not, and still do not, participate with insurance companies. Accepting commercial health insurance, along with Medicare, allowed RCBM to serve all people vs just the affluent.

RCBM has experienced significant growth over last 10 years, particularly in the last three years with the COVID pandemic. By incorporating remote care, RCBM has been able to branch out to meet needs in all of Michigan. In addition, we have added additional programs including medical nutrition therapy, along with developing our eating disorders and weight management programs. We have also added a Spravato treatment program (Esketamine) for treatment resistant depression and major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation.

With the central need for mental health care, Americans have become increasingly aware of treating anxiety, depression, and cognitive disorders. RCBM can expertly diagnose and treat scores of these conditions based on our size and caliber. The professional talent level has also grown significantly with the ability to employ talented practitioners from all over the state vs being limited to personnel within driving distance. RCBM is also a teaching facility with affiliations at various universities around the state, precepting medical, physician assistant, nurse practitioner and mental health students.

Today, RCBM is one of the finest outpatient mental health facilities in the state.

RCBM’s vision

RCBM’s vision aligns with our core values, which includes evidence-based treatment, measurable outcomes, and team collaboration between disciplines. We bring university level care to the community in a highly integrated team approach that is medically driven. We have created a family friendly environment for employees, with a self-affirming environment, by acknowledging the unique perspectives that our staff brings and encouraging them to incorporate best practices. It is important to us to maintain a progressive workplace, with Dr. Young working side by side with staff to encourage them to contribute their best. With the significantly increased need for mental health services, we continue to recruit and hire clinicians in order to keep up with the demand and reduce our wait times.

Our objectives

Aligning with our vision, our objectives are to bring to our patients and community:

  • Ongoing contribution to research in the field to create new treatment options
  • Evidence-backed treatment decisions
  • State of the art treatment
  • Reduction of barriers to mental health care
  • The use of multiple methods to understand a patient’s presentation including self-reports, self-assessments, and observer assessment
  • University level care and teaching

What sets us apart

Joel Young, MD and RCBM are leaders in mental health treatment research and providing high quality mental healthcare to a large number of people on a daily basis. We use multiple methods to understand a patient’s presentation, including self-reports, self-assessments, and observer assessments. Our research and data driven approach contributes to best practice, along with outcome data collected that shows the effectiveness of our interventions. We are open to adoption of new treatments and modalities without moving towards unsubstantiated, “trendy” treatments.

RCBM is one of the few mental health centers in the state that offers a sophisticated diagnostic component, which allows us to make evidence-backed treatment decisions in order to individualize treatment plans that are tailored to the unique needs of each patient. Although we offer a significant amount of virtual care throughout the state of Michigan, we are a brick and mortar based facility offering psychotherapy, psychotropic medication management and medical nutrition therapy under one “roof” allowing our professionals to consult with each other regularly about your care. We work as a multi-disciplinary, collaborative team to guide patient care, while offering a variety of clinical programs to meet specific needs.

RCBM's professional talent level has also grown significantly with the ability to employ talented practitioners from all over the state vs being limited to personnel within driving distance. Our supportive professional environment is demanding and encourages excellence, with ongoing consultation opportunities for staff and supervision of clinicians. Based on our size and caliber, RCBM can expertly diagnose and treat scores of mental health conditions.

"My first visit was a breath of fresh air. I had been using Cerebral app and was glad to switch to the Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine. My first appointment was thorough and I was able to seamlessly switch over. I very much prefer the individualized approach and care taken in regards to addressing my mental health issues. I would definitely recommend."

Please noteRCBM maintains the highest standard of medication management and adheres to rigorous policies including prescriptive authority, ordering, and documentation, along with frequency of patient monitoring of and response to all medications prescribed at RCBM. Our medication management program, including our ADHD medication management program, is overseen by Joel L. Young, MD, Medical Director, who is a psychiatrist.

In addition, many patients report that their previous treatment providers cannot keep up with prescription needs, and a number of patients are noncompliant as it is difficult for them to request and receive meds. One of the unheralded attributes of RCBM is our sophisticated pre-authorization system and six day a week electronic refills.
