The Sobriety Manual
MICHIGAN ADDICTION SPECIALIST GUIDES YOU ON YOUR JOURNEY TO SOBRIETY IN A STRAIGHTFORWARD YET COMPASSIONATE APPROACH.
In her new book, Aliya Pasik, PA-C, explains various types of addictions and their consequences in easy-to-understand terms, as she guides you on how to get the help you need.
Don’t wait for the legal system to make treatment mandatory. Addictions are life-threatening concerns, and this new book, The Sobriety Manual: The essential tool for sobriety, health, and happiness, is your companion on your recovery journey. This eight-chapter paperback is straightforward, informative, easy to read with its many metaphors, and can be read in any order. If a chapter jumps out at you, read it first, as the author directs. Included is a sobriety journal that instructs you to identify yourself as two people inside your head - the addict you and the sober you. You are urged to journal your thoughts and cravings as the “addict you”, while the “sober you” sets the record straight in the journal and seeks health-promoting activities.
The author, Aliya Pasik, PA-C, a physician assistant who is the Director of Addiction Medicine at Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine, Rochester Hills, Michigan, defines addiction and describes medical and mental health disorders that can lead to addiction, along with the rise in non-substance addictions such as gambling and porn. She also discusses the various levels of treatment for addiction, including inpatient detox, rehab, outpatient treatment, and support groups. The author’s style is direct yet supportive, as she serves as a companion on your journey, but makes it clear, “A stay in rehab is not a stay at the Ritz Carleton or a dating service to find your life partner.” The author also has a clever way of helping you identify whether or not you have a problem using the “baked potato test.”
Other chapters include: Where is the Buried Treasure? – overcoming your obstacles by looking at life differently and not letting pain define you; You Have a Mental Illness, So What Now? – how addiction comes with other psychological conditions such as ADHD, OCD, depression, and anxiety along with how they are treated concurrently; Chronic Pain, Suffering and Addiction – how sports injuries or autoimmune conditions such as fibromyalgia, migraines and other painful conditions are triggers for addiction and how a proper diagnosis for your pain is needed along with a sustainable treatment plan for a medical and mental health professional.
“As a TV news reporter for three years, I saw firsthand when children were killed by drunk drivers, followed by their parents being notified,” Aliya says. “I also witnessed fires and homicides caused by drugs and alcohol. Instead of talking about it, I decided to move my career in the direction of doing something about it.” Aliya enrolled in the Physician Assistant program at the University of Detroit Mercy, followed by training in addiction medicine at Henry Ford Maplegrove in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The book is available on Amazon in paperback, priced at $12.40
