Spice, a Dangerous Drug

The proliferation of the synthetic hallucinogens continues. Although there has been recent legislation and initiative to limit availability of synthetic drugs, they continue to be seen in southeastern Michigan. There are reports, some confirmed, some not, of domestic violence associated with these substances. Spice is marketed under a number of different names including; K-2, Black Mamba, Red X Dawn, and Blaze. These drugs have been outlawed throughout the country and Michigan is following suit.

They have a euphoric effect and many users will exhibit aggressive and violent behaviors. Many adolescents view this substance as "legal marijuana." They know that most urine drug screens do not evaluate for these compounds and in the past have enjoyed a reputation for being safe. In fact, they are not safe. Last year there were nearly 10,000 calls to poison control centers regarding these substances. There is greater awareness in the public schools and word is spreading among adolescents that these substances are not without risk. For some kids, this makes Spice all the more appealing. We should keep this in mind when trying to understand adolescents with behavioral issues, particular if they are recent onset. A recent story nicely summarizes this particular issue.
