Meet the Team: Alicia Basin, LPC

As one of the newest therapists at Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine, Alicia Basin brings unique specialties.

Basin, a licensed professional counselor who started with RCBM in June, focuses on helping LGBTQ+ patients who are struggling with related issues. She also treats substance abuse, trauma and eating disorders, with a particular emphasis on working with adults and teenagers. Her career has involved helping patients cope with issues including anxiety, depression, self-esteem and trauma.

“I’ve worked in a variety of settings, from an Assertive Community Treatment team in Washington D.C. that focused on underserved and homeless clients, to a sober living facility, where I provided therapy to residents who struggled with addiction and trauma,” Basin said.

“Most recently before joining RCBM, I was the clinical supervisor for a partial hospitalization program that treated children, teens and adults with various mental health issues through a full-day combination of individual and group therapy sessions.”

Basin uses a humanistic approach in which she customizes every session to meet the client’s needs. She focuses on having clients assess their goals and create a plan of action to achieve them.

“When I first meet a patient, I approach the initial session from a humanistic approach and utilize motivational interviewing strategies,” she said. “I start each initial session this way to build a therapeutic rapport and assist the patient with developing treatment goals. After the initial session, I use cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectic behavioral therapy to assist the patient in achieving these goals.”

A Michigan native, Basin grew up in Roseville and later lived in Shelby Township. She attended Oakland University for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a Master of Arts degree in counseling.

After getting her master’s degree, Basin spent a few years living in Washington D.C. before returning to Michigan. She currently lives in Ferndale with her fiancée, Corinne, an attorney who is originally from California. The two plan to marry August 22nd, 2020 in a small ceremony, with a larger gathering planned for next spring.

When she isn’t working, Basin enjoys spending time with family and friends, along with gardening, working out and playing with her dog, River and cat, Hallie - both of whom are liable to make occasional guest appearances in her remote therapy sessions.
