Psychiatrist reflects on tragic murder of Rob Reiner and his wife

Joel Young, MD, was interviewed by Fox 2 Detroit regarding the tragic killing of Rob Reiner by his adult son, who was living with serious mental illness.

Cases like this are heartbreaking and deeply complex. They force us to confront an uncomfortable reality: families can do many things right and still find themselves overwhelmed by an illness that disrupts judgment, insight, and behavior in ways that are difficult to predict or control.

When Mental Health Symptoms Warrant Urgent Care - But Not the ER

Jennifer Stone, LPC, NCC, CAADC discusses when to go to the emergency room for treatment vs urgent care. If you are an immediate risk to yourself including self-harm behaviors or suicidal thoughts, and/or the thought of doing harm to others, an ER visit is warranted. An urgent care visit would be warranted for non life threatening symptoms that impact daily living such as depression, anxiety, panic attack or sleep disturbances. In this situation, stabilization can take place with referral to a professional, such as RCBM clinicians, for long term management.

College Mental Health

Melissa Oleshansky, PhD, RYT, gives advice on how to protect your mental health at college. She cautions against confusing overachievement with wellbeing as saying yes to everything can leave you depleted. Know when to slow down, create space to think and feel, build in daily movement and fresh air, or call someone. Reach out early - asking for help from a therapist, friend, or family is not a weakness, it's emotional intelligence. You are worth taking of.

RCBM Celebrates its 30 year anniversary!

2023 is an exciting year for RCBM, as it marks our 30th year in practice.

Joel L. Young, MD started the Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine in 1993, inspired by his commitment to quality mental health care and a strong desire to bring outpatient psychiatric services to the community at large.

Dr. Young found there was a great need for measurement-based behavioral health care that, at that time, was only available to limited people – well-connected pockets in the community. He wanted to bring these services to a wider reach of individuals, which he has achieved by accepting a broad range of health plans and incorporating remote care to extend our reach across the state of Michigan.

Telehealth has also allowed us to employ talented practitioners from all over the state.

Today, RCBM is one of the finest outpatient mental health clinics in the state, offering dozens of specialized programs and services, and expertly diagnosing and treating scores of mental health conditions across the lifespan.

One of our senior psychologists, Melissa Oleshansky, PhD, recently interviewed Dr. Young about RCBM and what these 30 years have meant to him. Check it out!
